If you have been diagnosed with Vaginismus, chances are you've been advised to use dilators or trainers as part of your treatment. If you've never heard of dilators before, you're not alone - most people aren't aware of them or what they are for.
Over the years, we've met thousands of women with Vaginismus, and we've heard so many of them say that they don't want to use their dilators. When we've asked why, the same few reasons were given:
- They are horrible
- They are plastic
- They are big
- They are too blunt
- They hurt
- They aren't sexy
We heard these comments over and over again for several years, until one day, someone had a lightbulb moment: We have a silicone lab - why don't we make better dilators!
Designs were sketched out. Molds were made. Silicone was mixed. Silicone was poured. The manufacturing team anxiously waited for the silicone to set to see if the result would be good enough...
We had an overwhelmingly positive response to finished product, with one couple stating it helped them conceive!
The Sh! Soft Silicone Vibrating Dilating kit now comes highly recommended by Psychosexual Therapists all over the UK and many, many women prefer to use them over any other dilating kit on the market.
The finished result was a set of four soft silicone dilators with tapered tips and a base with enough space for a small bullet vibe.
Vibrating Dilators
The small bullet vibrator fills three functions.
Firstly, it's an excellent tool for arousal. Trying to dilate an unaroused vagina is hard work. As our Store Manger is fond of saying: "The garage doors are shut." What she means is, the entrance to the vagina is closed and nothing is getting in. If you work on arousal as part of your dilation, the dilation will become a little easier. The inside of the vagina opens up and makes more space when you're turned on, so taking some time to use the bullet vibe on neck, nipples, and clitoris (any erogenous zone, really) is time well spent.
Secondly, vibration helps relax tense nerve-endings. If your vagina is stubbornly refusing to open up, gently stroking over and around the opening can help relax it enough for your dilator to slip in without resistance. This helps build your confidence which in turn helps relax your brain, if it isn't too keen on anything being inserted into the vagina.
Thirdly, vibration is sexy. Majority of women need clitoral stimulation in order to have an orgasm and this is where vibration comes in so handy. It depends a little on how a dilator is positioned, but some of our custmers are able to get the required clitioral stimulation from the bullet in the base to orgasm - which makes dilation so much more fun!
How to Use The Sh! Dilators
It's really important to follow the instructions given to you by your health professional. They know your specific circumstances and what your end goal is (pain-free penetration / smear test / conception). The instructions for how often and for how long to use your dilators will vary from one woman to the next.
Always add a generous amount of water-based lubricant to both the dilator and your vulva & vagina as this will help ease the dilator in.
Whichever size dilator you are using, always start slowly and with a size that is slightly smaller - again, this helps get your body ready for dilation. Dilation is not a quick fix, it'll take time and you can suffer setbacks if there are stressful events occusing in your life. If this happens, don't panic and add to the stress you're already experiencing. Instead, give yourself a break, and then start again when you feel ready.
